The Golden Gopher women's gymnastics team has added a competition to the 2009 schedule, announced by the coaches today. Minnesota will compete in the Masters Classic at the University of Nebraska on Sunday, February 22. The meet will begin at 1 p.m., and features four teams. In addition to Nebraska and Minnesota, UCLA and North Carolina State will also participate in the competition.
The Masters Classic adds difficulty to an already tough competition slate for the Gophers in the 2009 season. UCLA finished the 2008 season ranked No. 7 nationally, while Nebraska finished last season ranked No. 13. North Carolina State was listed at No. 32 in the final 2008 national rankings.
When looking at the entire 2009 schedule, 14 of Minnesota's 15 Division I opponents advanced to an NCAA Regional Championship last season, and 11 of the Gophers' 2009 opponents finished last year among the top 25 nationally. The Gophers finished the 2008 season ranked No. 16 after a tremendous third-place performance at the NCAA North Central Region Championships.
