Maroon Defeats Gold Team 3-1

The Maroon Team defeated the Gold Team 3-1 in the third game of the “Steak N Beans” Fall Intrasquad Games on Friday, Oct. 3 to moved it to 2-1 in the best-of-seven series.

Maroon starter Tom Buske (Apple Valley, Minn.) combined with relievers Scott Fern (Eau Claire, Wis.) and Scott Matyas (North Prairie, Wis.) to limit the Gold Team to just one hit and struck out eight batters in the game.

Both teams got on the board in the first inning. AJ Pettersen (Minnetonka, Minn.) led the game off with a walk, and stole second for the Maroon Team. Kyle Geason (Eden Prairie, Minn.) brought him home with an RBI bloop single to make it 1-0.

The Gold Team answered in the bottom of the first with a single run to tie the game at 1-1. Albrecht led off the inning with a triple to right center field, and came home to score on an RBI ground out by Matt Puhl (North St. Paul, Minn.).

Maroon pushed across two runs in the bottom of the second to move ahead 3-1. Justin Gominskly (Mahtomedi, Minn.) got things started with an single to right center field, and moved up to second on a wild pitch. Kurt Schlangen ripped an RBI double to right field to plate Gominsky to give the Maroon Team a 2-1 lead. Drew Hanish dropped down a bunt that misplayed to allow Schlangen to move to third base. Pettersen plated Schlangen with an RBI groundout to give the Maroon Team a two-run lead.

Gominsky led the Maroon Team with two hits, while Petterssen, Geason and Hanish picked up RBI in the game. Albrecht’s hit was the only one on the day for the Gold Team.

Cullen Sexton (Plover, Wis.) and Tyler Oakes (Jordan, Minn.) both pitched well combining for five strikeouts in four scoreless innings.

Buske picked up the win, while Matyas recorded the first save of the series. Chauncy Handran (Scobey, Mont.) took the loss.

NOTES: The fourth game will be on “Family Day” on Saturday, Oct. 4 at 11 a.m.
