Gagnon and Marvin Lead Gophers to a 7-1 Win

The University of Minnesota women’s hockey team earned its first win of the 2008-09 season with a 7-1 win over Robert Morris, tonight, at Ridder Arena. The Golden Gophers had scoring from nine different players and improve to 1-1-0 on the season. Senior captains Gigi Marvin and Melanie Gagnon led the way, contributing three goals between the two of them and five points total. Of Gophers' seven goals, five came from different individuals.

Robert Morris opened with a goal at 4:17 in the first period as Chelsea Walkland scored her first goal of the season on a power-play attempt. However, the Gophers rallied to score two goals in the first to take a 2-1 lead into the first intermission. Jen Schoullis tipped in a Gagnon shot at 8:18 in the first. Monique Lamoureux had the second assist as she centered it to Gagnon. Marvin put the game at 2-1 when she scored a short-handed, unassisted goal at 9:09 in the first. The Gophers fired off 16 shots in the first period, while allowing just two to RMU.

The Gophers added to their lead when Sarah Erickson and Gagnon each scored a goal in the second to hold a 4-1 lead heading into the third period. Erickson netted her first goal as a Golden Gopher at 1:12 in the second. Erickson used a backhanded shot for the Gophers’ third goal, while linemate Jocelyne Lamoureux tallied the lone assist. Gagnon rifled in a slapshot from the point during the Gopher power-play at 14:31 in the second. Michelle Maunu and Brittany Francis each had assists on the play.

The Gophers quickly put the game at 6-1 when Marvin and Francis scored goals within six seconds of each other. Marvin notched her second unassisted goal of the evening when she scored at 4:12 in the third. Following the goal, Marvin won the faceoff and Francis brought it into the zone and scored her first goal of the season at 4:18. Erickson put the game at a 7-1 final when she scored her second goal of the game at 8:02 in the third on a power-play attempt. Jocelyne Lamoureux and Anne Schleper each had assists on the power-play goal.

Minnesota was 2-9 on the power-play and had 15 shots with the extra attacker. The Colonials were 1-9 with three shots.

Minnesota split action for two of its three goaltenders for the second straight night. Jenny Lura started in net for the Gophers and played in one period and earned the win. Freshman Alyssa Grogan saw action in two periods and had seven saves in the second and four in the third for a two-period total of 11 saves.

Minnesota begins one of the toughest portions of its schedule starting next weekend. The Gophers travel to No. 1 Minnesota Duluth, Oct. 10-11 and play at the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center at 7:07 p.m. Following the series against the Bulldogs, Minnesota hosts Ohio State (Oct. 17-18) and hit the road to No. 2 Wisconsin, Oct. 24 and 26.
