Gold Team Defeats Maroon 9-0 on ?Family Day?

The Gold Team defeated the Maroon Squad 9-0 on “Family Day” in the fourth game of the “Steak N Beans” Fall Intrasquad Games on Saturday, Oct. 4 to move to a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven series.
In the first inning, the Gold Team jumped out to a 1-0 lead. Matt Puhl (North St. Paul, Minn.) singled to left field to get things started, and moved up to second on a Kyle Knudson (Maple Grove, Minn.) walk. Puhl came home to score to make it 1-0 when Troy Larson’s (Maplewood, Minn.) sharp grounder to second was misplayed.
The Gold Team added a single run in the second inning to take a 2-0 lead. Freshman JT Canakes (Eden Prairie, Minn.) led off the inning with a double, and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Brooks Albrecht (Hutchinson, Minn.). Canakes came home to score on an RBI single by Puhl to give the Gold Team a two-run lead.
In the fifth inning, the Gold Team broke open the game with a four-run inning to take a 6-0 lead. Robert Stevenson (St. Louis, Mo.) led off the inning with a walk, and moved up to second on a single by Canakes. Albrecht laid down a perfect drag bunt to load the bases with no one out.
Puhl brought home Stevenson on an RBI bloop single to put the Gold Team up 3-0. Derek McCallum (Shoreview, Minn.) walked with bases loaded, and Knudson brought home Canakes on an RBI groundout. Another run scored on a ground out to make the score 6-0.
The Gold Team added three more runs in the seventh to make it 9-0. Canakes got things started with a one-out walk, and moved to third on a hit-and-run single by Albrecht. A wild pitch scored Canakes to give the Gold Team a 7-0 lead. After moving up on the wild pitch, Albrecht advanced to third on a fly out to center field. Albrecht scored the eighth run for the Gold Team on a passed ball. McCallum scored the ninth run when he reached on a bunt single, advanced to second on a passed ball and scored on an error by the second baseman.
On the afternoon, the Gold Team got great pitching from everyone who took the mound. Freshman Austin Lubinsky (LaCrosse, Wis.) pitched three perfect innings to open the game. Dustin Klabunde (Brownton, Minn.), Allen Bechstein (Apple Valley, Minn.) and Luke Rasmussen (Northfield, Minn.) combined for six shutout innings and struck out six batters between them. Five of the nine innings pitched by the Gold Team were 1-2-3 innings.
The Gold Team had 10 hits in the game, led by Albrecht and Puhl who each had three apiece. Puhl, Knudson and Larson each had two RBI on the afternoon.
AJ Pettersen (Minnetonka, Minn.) and Ethan Liederman (New York, N.Y.) each had one hit for the Maroon Squad. Phil Isaksson (Eau Claire, Wis.) also pitched effectively with two perfect innings for the Maroon Team.
NOTES: The fifth game of the “Steak N Beans” series will be on Friday, Oct. 10 at 3:30 p.m., and the sixth game will take place on Saturday, Oct. 11 at 12 p.m. ... The seventh game will take place on the weekend of Oct. 17 & 18 on a day and time to be determined ... All seven games will be played no matter what the series record of the teams is at the time.
