Gopher Men Lead Gridiron Classic After 36 Holes

The University of Minnesota men’s golf team hasn't played competitive golf since taking runner-up honors at the Adams Cup of Newport on Sept. 23 but they are not showing any rust, as they lead the Fighting Irish Gridiron Classic after 36 holes at the University of Notre Dame’s Warren Golf Course in South Bend, Ind.
The Gophers shot a combined team score of 19-over par 579 and hold a one-shot lead over Arkansas after shooting the low round of the tournament thus far with a 6-over par 286 in the morning session. Michigan State and Virginia are tied for third place.
The Gophers were led on Monday by junior Ben Pisani, who carded rounds of 71 and 72 and sits in a four-way tie for fourth place at 3-over par 143. Derek Chang continues to play well in his freshman campaign, as he rebounded with a 72 in the afternoon session after shooting a 4-over par 74 in the morning. He and teammate Andy Paulson, who recorded identical scores of 74-72, sit in a six-way tie for 11th place.
Senior Yu Katayama recorded the low round of the day for the Gophers with an even par 70 in the afternoon after a shooting a 78 in the morning. Fellow senior Victor Almstrom (74-75) and Katayama are in an eight-way tie for 27th.
Michigan State's Randy Hutchison, Arkansas' Andrew Landry and Virginia's Kyle Stough are in a three-way tie for medalist honors after posting 1-over par scores of 141.
The third and final round of the Fighting Irish Gridiron Classic will be played on Oct. 7 and can be followed live on golfstat.com.
