Gophers Earn a 2-1 Win Over St. Cloud State

11/1/2008 12:00:00 AM | Women's Hockey

Senior captain Gigi Marvin scored the game-winning goal as the Golden Gophers defeated St. Cloud State, 2-1, tonight at Ridder Arena. Marvin’s goal came at 12:38 in the third period as the Gophers improved to 6-2-1 overall and 5-1-1 in Western Collegiate Hockey Association action.

The two teams were each held scoreless after one period. The Huskies kept Minnesota back on its heels as the Gophers allowed 12 shots, while only firing off four. The Maroon and Gold, however, turned it around in the second period as Emily West broke the scoreless tie just :21 into the second period. West put in her own rebound, as she placed the puck high past Huskies’ goalie Ashley Nixon. After being outshot in the first period, Minnesota held the advantage in the second, outshooting the Huskies, 15-6 in the second.

SCSU responded when it set a school record for fastest goal into a period as it scored on the period-opening faceoff. Sammy Nixon and Caitlin Hogan capitalized on a two-on-one attempt as Nixon placed the puck right under the crossbar for her second goal of the season.

With the game tied at 1-1, Kelli Blankenship found Marvin all alone at the blue line. Marvin entered the zone, took a shot, but goalie Ashley Nixon got a piece of it. However, the puck slid through the pads as it lay there for Marvin to bang home the rebound. The Huskies attempted to tie the game as they pulled Nixon with 45 seconds remaining in the game, but Minnesota was able to hold off the Huskies.

In a penalty-filled game, both teams were called for 11 penalties for 22 minutes. Minnesota was 0-9 on the power-play, while SCSU was 1-8 with the extra attacker.

Grogan had a stellar night in goal for Minnesota. She stopped 12 shots in the first, six in the second and seven in the third for a three-period total of 25 saves. She was later named the No. 1 star of the game, followed by West and SCSU’s Sammy Nixon.

The Gophers and Huskies will continue the series tomorrow at 7:07 p.m. The game will be played at the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn.
