Gophers Win Three Events in Second Night of Grand Prix

The No. 9 University of Minnesota women’s swimming and diving team won the 50 free and the 400 medley relay to complete the second day of the Minnesota Grand Prix, tonight at the University Aquatic Center. The Grand Prix, concludes tomorrow evening with the finals starting at 5 p.m.

The Gophers dominated the 50 freestyle event taking the top four sports. Stacy Busack won the event in 23.29, while Alison Eggers finished second in 23.44. Meagan Radecke touched the wall in 23.55 for third, followed by Meredith McCarthy in fourth (23.75). Marissa Davies won the B Final in the event (24.11), while Jenna Lennertz placed 12th (24.25).

Kaylee Jamison finished second in the 400 individual medley when she clocked a time of 4:22.40, while Kristen Steenvoorden finished third in the same event in 4:22.84. Freestyler Christine Jennings also competed in the 400 IM as she placed 10th overall in 4:28.57.

Jillian Tyler led the Gophers in the 200 breaststroke, while three made the A Final. Tyler held a second-place time of 2:11.63, while Kait Strickland placed fourth (2:18.99) and Kimberly Kazika in sixth (2:20.25). Corina Hopkins-Vacca added a 12th-place time of 2:23.20, while Molly Belk won the C Final in 2:20.11.

In 100 back action, Lennertz led the Gophers in the event with a seventh-place time of 57.76, while Deidre DeWall chipped in a time of 57.84 for eighth. Former Gopher Roxane Akradi placed third in 55.91.

Yuen Kobayashi led the Gophers in the 500 free when she finished third in the event. Kobayashi chipped in a season-best time of 4:46.69, while Mary Descenza won in 4:43.20. Ashley Steenvoorden and Christine Jennings also competed in the 500 free and took the sixth and seventh-place spots overall. Steenvoorden  had a sixth-place time of 4:51.16 and Jenning held a time of 4:53.81 for seventh.

Minnesota closed out the second evening of the Grand Prix when the Gophers won the 400 medley relay. Hannah Whitehead, Jillian Tyler, Kaylee Jamison and Stacy Busack combined for the winning time of 3:44.44. Arkansas placed second in 3:49.97, while Minnesota took the next three spots. The relay of Lennertz, Kazika, Braun and McCarthy 3:50.14, while DeWall, Strickland, Belk and Eggers finished in the time of 3:50.14. Cory Miller, Avery Michienzi, Danielle Ridder and Radecke finished in 3:54.68. 

Along with the Grand Prix, Minnesota is also hosting the Minnesota Diving Invite. Taylor Enerson won the platform with a score of 245.85. It was the first time this year that Minnesota has competed in the platform. She also had a best score and qualified for Zone diving. Emma Shankland finished fifth with the score of  143.70, while Maggie Thomas placed sixth with a score of 187.73.

In both the 1-meter and the 3-meter events, Thomas paved with the way for Minnesota. In the 1-meter, Thomas had six-dive score of 252.38 and in a 3-meter (6 dives) score of 293.18. thomas' score in the 3-meter was a personal best and was a zone diving qualifying score. Enerson finished fourth in the 3-meter (231.83) and the 1-meter (218.93). Shankland also competed in both events. Shankland placed sixth in the both the 1 and 3-meters. She held a score of 173.03 in the 1-meter and 3-meter score of 203.63.
