Gophers Earn 3-1 Win Over No. 9 Harvard

11/29/2008 12:00:00 AM | Women's Hockey

The No. 2 University of Minnesota women’s hockey team earned a 3-1 win over No. 9 Harvard, tonight at Ridder Arena. The Golden Gophers (12-2-1) had scoring from three different skaters, while holding Harvard (4-3-2) to just one goal.

Monique Lamoureux set the pace early for the Gophers, scoring just 32 seconds into the contest. Lamoureux held the puck just long enough for Harvard goalie Christina Kessler to go down into her stance and placed the puck just over Kessler’s leg to score the goal. Gigi Marvin was credited with the first assist when she found Lamoureux, while Kelly Seeler had the second assist. With a majority of play in the neutral zone, each team only managed five shots on goal in the first period. The Crimson’s best attempt of the stanza came when Kati Vaughn’s shot rang off the pipe.

After the two teams went scoreless in the second period, Minnesota added two goals, while Harvard scored late in the third to keep it within two. Kelli Blankenship took advantage of a rebound attempt when she scored her third goal of the season at 5:33 in the third. Sarah Erickson took the initial shot, but Blankenship was there for the rebound. Brittany Francis tallied the second assist as she found Erickson crashing the net. Emily West and Monique Lamoureux combined together to score a short-handed goal at 9:03 in the third. On the penalty kill, Lamoureux and West were able to take control of the puck just outside of the Harvard zone. Lamoureux took the shot and Kessler got a piece of it, but could not stop the rolling puck. As the puck was edging near the goal line, West banked it in for her sixth goal of the season. It was Minnesota’s fourth short-handed goal of the season. Lamoureux has two this year, while Gigi Marvin and West each have one.

Harvard’s Jenny Brine scored an unassisted power-play goal at 14:40 in the third to put to Crimson back within two, but Minnesota was able to hold off Harvard for the remainder of the game. Harvard was called for three penalties at the end of the game with a holding (15:08) and back-to-back interference calls at 16:59 and 19:10. After being outshot, 10-5 in the second period, Minnesota dominated in the third, 12-5.

Alyssa Grogan had another stellar night in goal for the Maroon and Gold. Grogan held the Crimson scoreless for two and a half periods. She had five saves in the first, 10 in the second and four in the third for a three-period total of 19. With the win, she improves to 6-0-1, while Kessler dropped to 3-3-1 and had 19 saves.

The two teams will complete the series tomorrow at 4:07 p.m.
