Gophers Gear Up For Pack the Pool and Iowa

PACK THE POOL THIS WEEKEND
The University of Minnesota men's and women's swimming and diving teams host the Iowa Hawkeyes, Friday at 5 p.m. at the University Aquatic Center. The Golden Gophers will also host its annual "Pack the Pool" event. Fans will receive free giveaways, face-painting and an receive autographs from the Gopher student-athletes.

LAST WEEKEND RECAP
Minnesota broke seven meet records and established provisional qualifying times to defeat No. 16 North Carolina in Chapel, Hill, N.C. The Gophers broke meet records in the 200 and 400 medley relays the 100 and 200 breaststroke events and the 200 individual medley (Jillian Tyler),the 800 free relay and the 500 free (Christine Jennings. Minnesota provisionally qualified in numerous events including the 100 and 200 breaststroke (Tyler) and the 500 free (Christine Jennings).  

TYLER NAMED BIG TEN SWIMMER OF THE WEEK
Sophomore Jillian Tyler was named the Big Ten Swimmer of the Week for her performance against NOrth Carolina last weekend. Tyler went a perfect 5-for-5 in event wins in a 217-151 dual meet victory against No. 16 North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C. The sophomore from Calgary, Alb., earned NCAA consideration times in the 100- and 200-yard breastroke, timing in at 1:00.72 and 2:11.73, respectively.  Her final individual win was in the 200 individual medley as she clocked a 2:01.69.  All three individuals races were meet records.  The Canadian also swam a leg on the winning 200 (1:42.15) and 400 medley relay squads (3:43.16), which were also meet records against the Tar Heels. This is Tyler's third weekly honor and the Gophers' second of the week. 

ABOUT THE HAWKEYES
The Hawkeyes started the season with a win over Truman State, a loss to Wisconsin and back-to-back wins against Michigan State and Nebraska.The Hawkeyes, who are coached by Marc Long, defeated the Cornhuskers by a score of 192-107 last weekend.  

LAST YEAR AGAINST IOWA
Minnesota earned a 179-111 win over Iowa last year in Iowa City, Iowa. Minnesota went on to win 14 of 16 events against the Hawkeyes and set six meet records. Leading the pack for the Gophers was Meredith McCarthy with 50 and 100 free wins, Deidre DeWall with wins in the 100 and 200 back and Yuen Koayashi with wins in the 500 and 1,000 free.

ON THE STARTING BLOCKS
The University of Minnesota will host the Minnesota Grand Prix, Nov. 14-16 at the University Aquatic Center. The afternoon session begins at noon, followed by finals at 6 p.m.
