University of Minnesota senior Alex Seaton captured the individual title at the Campus Match Play women’s tennis showdown on Saturday at the Baseline Tennis Center.
The open event, which is a joint United States Tennis Association and Intercollegiate Tennis Association program, was open to juniors, college players, professionals and adults and consisted of one-set matches. A total of 18 players participated in the main women’s draw.
Seaton, an Edina native, did not compete in any fall matches for the Gophers and missed much of the 2007-08 season with an injury. She beat Emilie Renault, a junior at Rochester Mayo High School, by a 6-4 score in the championship match. Seaton reached the finals with a 6-2 win over Air Force recruit Hannah Dake from Excelsior and defeated teammate Peta Forsyth 6-1 in the quarterfinals.
Dake beat Gopher freshman Magdalena Wiecha 6-3 for third place after Renault defeated Wiecha 6-4 in the semifinals.
