Gophers To Hold Intrasquad Meet Friday

The University of Minnesota men’s gymnastics squad will hold an intrasquad Maroon-Gold meet at 2:30 p.m. Friday at the gymnasium in Cooke Hall. It will be the first time head coach Mike Burns will have a chance to get a look at his 2009 squad in a competitive situation.
“This intrasquad meet will give us a chance to really see how far along we are at this point in the pre-season training phase,” Burns said. “I’m pretty pleased with where we are right now but we will have a much clearer picture on where we are after Friday.”
According to Burns, he’ll be looking for athletes who step up under the pressure of a competitive situation.
“This is a great chance to see who will step up and establish themselves as the most reliable in a competition setting,” Burns said. “The key to success in our sport is handling the pressure of a high precision exercise on a regular basis. The more ice water running through your veins the better.”
The Maroon-Gold will be the first competitive situation for the 2009 Gophers in a season they hope culminates with competition in the 2009 NCAA Men’s Gymnastics Championships, which Minnesota will be hosting April 16-18.
“This is the first step in our quest for success in the 2009 season,” Burns said. “We are hosting the NCAA Championships in April and we want to be the most prepared team at the competition and this is where it all begins.”
