Minnesota senior midfielder Kelsey Hood was named this week as one of 144 national selectees to participate in the Women’s Professional Soccer combine slated for Dec. 18-21 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The combine serves as a chance for athletes to showcase their talent in anticipation for the 2009 WPS Draft on Jan. 16.

Hood, the 2008 Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, was a leading cog in a Minnesota midfield this season. She helped lead the team to its first Big Ten regular season title since 1997 and to advance to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen for the first time in program history. Hood was also named to the NSCAA/adidas All-Great Lakes Region first team at the conclusion of the season. Hood’s presence as a defensive midfielder helped the Gophers record a Big Ten Conference record 17 shutouts this fall and to finish the 2008 campaign as one of just seven schools with 20 victories or more.

Selections for the WPS combine are made following a thorough selection process conducted by the WPS Coaches Committee. Over the course of the weekend, The athletes will participate in general training and physical testing before dividing into teams.

Hood has spent the last two summers playing for the Boston Renegades of the W-League. She spent the summer of 2006 playing in the W-League for the Minnesota Lightning.
