Team Notes:
Tubby Smith moved to 32-14 as the head coach of Minnesota, and 419-159 for his career.
Smith is 4-0 against High Point with tonight’s victory. Smith last faced High Point during the 2005-06 season while at Kentucky.
The 12-0 start is the best by Tubby Smith in his career.
Minnesota has started off 12-0 for the first time since the 1948-49 season.
This was the first meeting between the two schools.
Minnesota is one of nine teams in the nation that are undefeated at this point in the season.
Minnesota made a season-high 11 three-pointers, tying for sixth on the school’s all-time single-game list. The Gophers last made 11 treys during an 85-67 loss at second-ranked Ohio State on Feb. 18, 2007.
Minnesota had a season-high 24 assists on the night. It was the most assists by the Golden Gophers since Dec. 12, 2007, when they also had 24 against South Dakota State.
Minnesota’s 14 blocks as a team were its second-highest total of the season. The Golden Gophers had a season-high 17 blocks in the win against Bowling Green on Nov. 15.
Minnesota had 13 steals on the night. It was the fourth time this year that the Golden Gophers had double-figure steals against their opposition.
The Williams Arena crowd of 13,122 was the second-largest of the season. A crowd of 13,161 was in attendance when the Gophers defeated North Dakota State on Nov. 29.
Under Tubby Smith, the Gophers are now 17-0 in regular-season non-conference games at Williams Arena. Dating back to the 2006-07 season under Jim Molinari, Minnesota has won 18 consecutive regular-season non-league games at home.
Smith improved to 23-6 (.793) overall at Williams Arena during his two seasons at Minnesota.
The Gophers had five players reach double-figures for scoring, which tied for the most players in double-digits this season. Minnesota also had five players with 10 points or more in the win over Eastern Washington on Nov. 26.
Individual Player Notes:
Ralph Sampson established a career-high of 17 points in the win, making 7-of-10 field goals and 3-of-4 free throws, while also pulling down six rebounds, dishing out three assists, and blocking two shots versus the Panthers.
Devoe Joseph reached double-figures for the first time as a Gopher, finishing with 11 points off the bench. He connected on 4-of-7 field goals, which included an impressive 3-of-4 from beyond the arc. He added two assists and a pair of steals in 17 minutes of action.
Devron Bostick tied his season-high total for points, finishing with 11 markers in 19 minutes off the bench. Bostick made 4-of-9 attempts from the field, including 3-of-4 from three-point range, and chipped in with a pair of assists and two steals.
Al Nolen did not score in the victory, but ran the offense effectively, finishing with seven assists with no turnovers and a steal in 18 minutes on the court.
