Big Ten Champion Women's Track Recognized

The Minnesota women’s track & field team was recognized at Saturday’s men’s basketball game in Williams Arena.
Coached by 2008 Big Ten Conference and NCAA Midwest Region coach of the year Matt Bingle, the Gophers have strung together three seasons in which they have captured a Big Ten team title. The Gophers celebrated four All-Americans last season, most notably national runner-up performances by Heather Dorniden in the 800 meters and Liz Roehrig in the heptathlon.
Even more impressive are the numbers these Golden Gophers put together in the classroom. With the largest track roster in the nation, annually around 100 student-athletes, these women annually rank among the national leaders in team grade-point-average. Last season, Minnesota easily led the Big Ten and was ranked 20th in the country with an impressive 3.372 GPA. Dorniden and Liz Podominick earned prestigious ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America honors and Ashley Nord accomplished an amazing honor by becoming a Rhodes Scholar.
Gopher distance runner Celia Hemmerich sang the National Anthem prior to the game.
