Gabriele Anderson Clocks NCAA Provisional Time in 800 Meters

Junior Gabriele Anderson cruised to the title in the 800 meters, clocking an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 2 minutes, 8.97 seconds, to lead the efforts of the No. 7 Minnesota women’s track & field team Saturday at the Parents’ Day Open. Anderson surpassed the national standard running against the clock, as the she won the event by over five seconds.

Senior Liz Podominick won the title in the shot put with her best effort of the season. Podominick landed her winning throw, 51 feet, 2 3/4 inches, on the second throw of her series.

Senior Dawn Solberg posted her best time of the season, 8.62 seconds, to lead a one-two finish for the Gophers in the 60-meter dash. Nicole Carroll was second in 8.90.

Three other Gophers captured event titles on Saturday. Chioma Omeoga won the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.83 seconds. Mallory Van Ness breezed to the win in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 10:11.31, 16 seconds faster than her nearest competitor. Natalie Devine joined Podominick as a champion in the field events. Devine cleared a career-best 5-7 1/4 to win the high jump.

A majority of the Golden Gophers’ top runners skipped the meet in preparation for next weekend’s (March 1-2) Big Ten Women’s Indoor Track & Field Championships. Minnesota hosts the Championships for the first time since 2000.
