Minnesota's women secured four medal finishes in Indianapolis.
MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Minnesota women's track and field team finished seventh overall at the 2026 Big Ten Indoor Championships in Indianapolis, Ind., at Fall Creek Pavillion. Minnesota scored 18 points on Thursday, 12 on Friday and 18 on Saturday to finish in the top half of the 18-team conference.
Minnesota's Distance Medley Relay (DMR) earned a medal finish for the second consecutive season with a runner-up performance in a time of 10:57.35. The quartet of Zoie Dundon, LauBenra Ben, Nadia Phillips and Isabelle Schmitz combined for the silver medal, which is the highest finish by a Minnesota DMR at Big Tens since the team won the event in 2021. Schmitz also added a second scoring performance on Saturday in the women's mile, clocking a 4:42.66 to finish eighth overall.
The top scoring event for the Minnesota Golden Gophers in Indianapolis this weekend was the women's weight throw. Led by Anthonett Nabwe's 23.09m (75-9 1/4) runner-up finish, the Gophers scored 12 points in the weight throw with Hadley Streit's 22.41m (73-6 1/4) earning an additional four team points for finishing fifth. Streit's fifth-round toss went down as a lifetime best, and improved on her No. 4 all-time position at Minnesota in the weight throw. For Nabwe, performance is the 10th time in her legendary career that she has eclipsed 23-meters in the weight and is her third straight Big Ten medal.
Nabwe added a second scoring performance in the shot put on Saturday. The redshirt-junior tossed her fifth-round throw an indoor lifetime best of 17.36m (56-11 1/2) to earn her highest career finish in the shot put in her three appearances at the indoor conference meet. The mark for Nabwe improves on her No. 2 spot in program history indoors in the shot put, inching her ever closer to the school record held by Kiley Sabin (17.47m | 57-3 3/4 - 2019).
On Saturday the Golden Gophers earned their first and second bronze medals of the conference championships in Diarra Sow (Triple Jump) and Dundon (800m). Dundon's four-lap performance at the Fall Creek Pavilion stopped the clock in 2:01.56 to set a new school record in the event. For Dundon, the school record is her third of the 2026 indoor season, adding the 800m record to her already existing indoor mile (4:31.92) and DMR (10:55.64) program bests. Dundon's 800m school record broke Brooke Jaworski's 2024 program record of 2:03.48. The Burnsville, Minn., native is the only Gopher woman to currently hold three indoor program records at once.
The bronze medal leap from Sow on Saturday goes down as the first Big Ten medalist for the Maroon and Gold in the indoor event since 2022 when Tiera Robinson-Jones was also third (12.67m | 41-7). Sow's third-place mark came on her second attempt of the competition, nearly matching her indoor lifetime best with a 13.32m (43-8 1/2).
The first scorer of the weekend for the Maroon and Gold came on Thursday in the form of Sofia Condon in the women's pole vault. The Andover, Minn., native finished sixth with a indoor lifetime-best clearance of 4.25m (13-11 1/4). The sixth-place finish goes down as a career-best at the conference meet, besting her seventh-place finish at the 2024 Big Ten Indoor Championships (4.15m | 13-7 1/4).
Arguably the highlight of Thursday's scoring for 'U' came via Ali Weimer in the 5000m. The redshirt junior took a tumble four-and-a-half minutes into the competition and fell to the back of the race before getting up and capturing fourth overall in a time of 15:48.43. Weimer's gutsy performance in Indianapolis brought back memories of Heather Dorniden's viral comeback in the women's 600m at the 2008 Big Ten Championships in Minneapolis, Minn., that saw the former Gopher fall 400m into the race before winning the title in dramatic fashion.
Weimer returned to the track two days later to put down an eighth-place finish in the 3000m in a time of 9:10.55. By scoring in the 3000m, the Saint Michael, Minn., native capped off a weekend where the Maroon and Gold women scored in the 800m (Dundon), Mile (Schmitz), 3000m (Weimer) and 5000m (Weimer), the first time that has happened for the program since 2016.
Indoor Big Tens kicked off with Kennedy Martinson in the pentathlon. The redshirt sophomore captured a seventh place finish in the multi-event, highlighted by a second-place finish in the 800m (2:14.65) while being fourth overall in the 60m hurdles (8.46). Martinson's 8.46 time in the 60m hurdles was a season-best as well as her 5.63m (18-5 3/4) mark in the long jump. Martinson's efforts led to a total of 3,964 points, a season's best for the third-year Gopher who is No. 5 all-time at the 'U' in the pentathlon.
