Gophers Women Compete at the UW-Stout Invitational

The University of Minnesota women's track and field team competed at the UW-Stout Invitational on February 2, 2007, held in Menomonie, Wis. No team scores were kept, but the Golden Gophers had an impressive showing at the invite.

The Gopher women sent four into the pole vault competition and came back with the top four spots. Senior Andrea Smith took first place with a mark of 13 feet 1 inches followed by senior Ashley Nord (12-1 ) in second. Freshman Samantha Sonnenberg (12-1 ) and junior Laura Massey (11-7 ) followed with a third and fourth-place showing. Sonnoenberg's mark put her seventh on Minnesota's top-10 list.

Minnesota also finished strongly in the 3,000-meter run with the Gophers placing second through seventh. Junior Danielle Ashford ran a time of 10 minutes, 28.50 seconds to finish second with Christina Engstrom (10:30.86), Ariella DePrenger-Gottfried (10:31.01), Emma Miller (10:32.11), Kelly Wilson (10:34.90) and Carie Steil (10:38.92) following behind respectively.

Sophomore Clarissa Bootsma won the mile run with a career-best time of 5 minutes, 13.79 seconds. Fellow Gopher Dagmura Handzlik placed fourth (5:18.41).

In the 200-meter run, sophomore Jessica Strong finished second with a time of 26.67 seconds. Behind her, placing fifth in the 200 meters, was freshman Kate Baillon (27.59).

Another Gopher who placed was freshman Shannon Daggat who ran a time of 59.61 seconds in the 400 meter dash to finish second.

The University of Minnesota women's track and field team next meet is at the Notre Dame Invitational Feb. 8-9 in South Bend, Ind.
