Voting Starts for Frozen Four Skills Challenge

The NCAA announced that voting for players in the 2008 Frozen Four Skills Challenge began Monday, online at www.NCAA.com and will run until February 14. The University of Minnesota men's and women's hockey teams are each represented in the skills challenge voting in men's center Evan Kaufmann (Plymouth, Minn.) and women's hockey forwards Erica McKenzie (Hastings, Minn.) and Bobbi Ross (Verwood, Sask.).

The Frozen Four Skills Challenge will be held April 11 at the Pepsi Center in Denver and will highlight the “Friday Night at the Frozen Four”. The night will also include the presentation of the Hobey Baker Memorial Award, the Hockey Humanitarian Award and the announcement of the American Hockey Coaches Association All-American teams. Fans will be able to select six position players and two goalies for each gender of the East team and each gender of the West team.

Kaufmann, a team captain, has played in 30 games for the Gophers and has produced 11 points on the season. Of his five goals scored, Kaufmann has netted three power-play goals, one short-handed goal and game-winning goal. In his career, the senior has produced 28 goals and 26 assists for 54 points in 132 games played.

On the women’s side, McKenzie leads the team with 18 goals and ranks second on the team in scoring with 31 points. Of her 18 goals scored, the senior has notched a WCHA-leading seven power-play goals as well as six game winners and two short-handed goals. In her career, McKenzie has reached the 100-point mark with 68 goals and 63 assists for 131 points. Her largest season point production came in sophomore year when she was the WCHA Scoring Champion (40 league points) and was a All-WCHA First Team honoree. Ross, a three-year captain, ranks third on the team with 29 points. With 12 goals and 17 assists, Ross ranks ninth in the league in scoring, including 22 points in WCHA action. In her career, Ross has netted 67 goals and 73 assists for 140 points, ranking her eighth in school history. Ross, who has earned most valuable player honors the past two seasons, was also a third-team All-WCHA selection in 2007.
