Schwecke Leads Heptathlon After Day One at Coca-Cola Classic

Redshirt freshman Joey Schwecke posted top finishes in three of four events to grab the lead in the heptathlon competition at the UW-River Falls Coca-Cola Classic in River Falls, Wis., on Friday. Schwecke totaled 2,896 points after the first day. The heptathlon will continue on Saturday at 9 a.m., while the Classic’s field events kick off a 10 a.m. and track events at 12 noon.

Schwecke won the 55-meter dash in 6.62 seconds to take the lead from the first event. He landed a leap of 22 feet, 1 3/4 inches in the long jump and a throw of 36-4 in the shot put, before completed the first half of the heptathlon with an effort of 6-4 in the high jump. The heptathlon will conclude with the 55-meter hurdles, pole vault and 800 meters tomorrow.

Sophomore David Meissner is in second place with 2,683 points, followed by redshirt freshman Garrett Wankel in third with 2,640 points.
