The Minnesota baseball team (4-6) was outdueled by Pacific (3-12) as it dropped a 1-0 decision in the series opener on Friday, Mar. 14. It was the first time the Golden Gophers have been shut out since Mar. 10, 207 when they dropped a 12-0 loss to Missouri State at home.

Minnesota got a strong pitching effort from starter Tom Buske (Apple Valley, Minn.) who went six innings, gave up five hits, one run, walked four and struck out three. Buske took the tough-luck loss to fall to 1-2 on the season. Redshirt freshman reliever Scott Matyas (North Prairie, Wis.) pitched two scoreless innings, giving up just one hit and striking out two batters. Matyas has not given up a run in his last three outings, which has spanned eight outings.

Pacific starter Tyler Waldron went the distance to pick up the win to move to 1-2. Waldron gave up just three hits, walked one batter and struck out 11 in nine innings of work.

Nohelty reached base twice, and was 1-for-4 on the night, while Michael Kvasnicka (Lakeville, Minn.) and Kyle Knudson (Maple Grove, Minn.) each went 1-for-3. Jeff Engel (Minnetonka, Minn.) also reached on a walk, while Nate Hanson (Chanhassen, Minn.) reached when he was hit by a pitch.

Pacific got on the board first with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Adam Ching led off with a single to center field. Ching moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt, and to third on a fly out. Michael McKeever brought Ching home with two-out RBI double to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead.

Minnesota got its first runner in scoring position in the top of the third inning. Knudson singled and stole second with two outs, but Waldron retired the Nohelty to get out of the inning.

Pacific threatened to add to its lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. With two outs, Kerry Jenkins walked and stole second and third. After Ching walked to make it first and third, Buske got Joe Oliveira to ground out to end the inning.

Minnesota had a chance to tie it in the top of the sixth inning when Nohelty tripled to left center field with two outs. Chlan slammed a line drive that was snagged by Pacific shortstop Jonathan Lewis to get Waldron out of the inning.

The Golden Gophers dodged a bullet in the bottom of the sixth inning. Pacific loaded the bases with one out against Buske. However, Mike Walker grounded a ball to the right side that Chlan made diving stab to come up with. He flipped the ball to McCallum who completed the double play to allow Buske to escape the inning unscathed.

In the top of the ninth, Nohelty hit a hot shot to third base to reach first. He moved to second on a throwing error on pickoff throw to get into scoring position. Waldron struck out the final two batters to finish his first career complete game.

Pacific was led by McKeever, who accounted for three hits, going 3-for-4 and knocking in the only run of the game. Chin reached base twice, and was 1-for-3 with a run.

Minnesota will be back in action on Saturday, Mar. 15 at 4 p.m. (CT) and on Sunday, Mar. 16 at 3 p.m. (CT). Those games can be heard on gophersports.com and on KLBB (1220 AM).
