University of Minnesota women's hockey center Gigi Marvin has been named a second-team All-American, announced last night during the NCAA Frozen Four semifinal games by the American Hockey Coaches Association. Marvin, the team's leading scorer, is the first Gopher to earn All-America honors since the Gophers' 2005 championship season when Natalie Darwitz, Jody Horak, Lyndsay Wall and Krissy Wendell earned All-America accloades.
Marvin, a junior from Warroad, Minn., led the Gophers to a 27-7-4 overall record and a 21-5-2 mark in the WCHA, ranking second behind champions, Minnesota Duluth. In 38 games played, Marvin scored 23 goals and 31 assists for 54 points. She finished second overall in conference scoring with 38 conference points behind UMD's Haley Irwin, who had 43 conference points. Marvin was the driving force to the Gophers' power-play unit, scoring 24 of her 54 points with the extra attacker and led the Gophers to a nation's third-best power play at a 24.5 conversion percentage. The 2007-08 season marked the second-straight year Marvin was named a first-team All-WCHA selection and was also named a top-10 finalist for the Patty Kazmaier Award, which is given to the top women's hockey player of the year.
Marvin joins head coach Brad Frost in post-season honors as coach Frost is a finalist for the AHCA National Coach of the Year.
