Gophers Finish 13th at the NCAA Championships

The University of Minnesota women's swimming and diving team scored 96 points to finish 13th at the NCAA Championships, tonight in Columbus, Ohio. Although the Gophers held the same placing, they earned 37 more points then a year ago, earning 59 points in 2007.

Jillian Tyler earned her third first-team All-America honors of the NCAA Championships when she placed seventh in the 200 breaststroke in a time of 2:10.61. Tyler earned first-team All-America honors with the 400 medley relay and became the NCAA runner-up in the 100 breaststroke. She also earned All-America honorable mention accolades with a member of the 200 medley relay to become a four-time All-American as a freshman.

Megan Braun earned All-America honorable mention honors when she placed 12th overall in a time of 1:57.94. It was her first individual All-America honors of her short career after being a member of both the 200 and 400 medley relay.

The Gophers closed out the championships when they placed 12th in the 400 free relay. The Gopher foursome of Jenny Shaughnessy, Stacy Busack, Meredith McCarthy and Roxane Akradi broke their previous school record of 3:17.89, which they set during the prelims. The relay improved their school record to touch the wall in a time of 3:17.19 and placed 12th overall.

Yuen Kobayashi led the Gophers in the 1,650 freestyle when she finished 19th overall with a time of 16:21.49. Christine Jennings followed with a 22nd place overall when she recorded a career-record time of 16:27.31.

The NCAA Championships capped off a successful season for the Golden Gophers. Minnesota held a 7-1 dual meet record and won the Big Ten Championships, also in Columbus.
