Six members of the eighth-ranked Minnesota men’s gymnastics squad were honored by the Big Ten today as the league office announced its winter term Academic All-Conference teams.
The list of Golden Gophers honored includes sophomores Aaron Fortunato, Colin McGuire, Thomas O’Brien, Adam Reichow, junior Kit Beikmann and senior Kyle True.
All six have contributed for the Gophers during the 2008 campaign, with Fortunato, McGuire, Reichow and Beikmann posting some of the team’s top scores this season.
Fortunato, the only Minnesota gymnast to compete all-around in every competition this year, currently holds the Gophers’ No. 3 score on floor exercise and parallel bars as well as the squad’s top all-around score.
Reichow has Minnesota’s fourth-best floor exercise score, while McGuire owns the team’s fourth-best high bar point total.
Beikmann, the nation’s No. 4-ranked performer on pommel horse, has turned in each of the Gophers’ top five routines on the apparatus this season, including a 15.00 at Oklahoma on March 15.
To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, student-athletes must be letterwinners in at least their second academic year at their institution and carry a cumulative grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher.
