Junior Ibrahim Kabia won the 100 meters and finished second in the 200 meters to top the performances of the Minnesota men’s track & field team at the Oregon Pepsi Team Invitational in Eugene, Ore., on Saturday. Oregon won the team title with 230 points. Minnesota finished third with 140.5.

Kabia broke the tape in a time of 10.39 seconds to win the 100 meters in a time that is an NCAA Midwest Region Championships qualifier and the fourth-best time in school history. He placed second in the 200 meters with a time of 21.48 seconds.

The Gophers also gathered top performances by Hassan Mead and Chris Rombough in the 5,000-meter run. Minnesota’s duo of cross country All-Americans finished second and third in the event, both collecting qualifying times for the NCAA Midwest Regional. Mead finished second with a time of 13:57.87, just six hundredths of a second off the winning time, but good enough for seventh on the all-time Minnesota top-10 list for the event. Rombough was third in 14:07.31, the ninth-best time in school history.

“We had some decent performances but overall we had a bit of a lack-luster day,” said Golden Gopher head coach Phil Lundin.

Two other Gophers earned runner-up finishes. Hans Storvick clocked a personal-best time of 1:50.52 in the 800-meter run, while Brock Spandl finished second in the pole vault clearing 16 feet, 3/4 inch.

Minnesota travels to Arizona for two meets next weekend: Friday, April 11 at the Mesa Classic and Saturday, April 12 at the Sun Angel Classic.
