University of Minnesota defenseman Cade Fairchild has been named to the freshman All-America team by Inside College Hockey.
Fairchild, a Duluth native who attended Duluth East High School and played with the U.S. National Development team last season, totaled two goals and 13 assists for 15 points in 40 games played with the Gophers. He ranked second among the team’s defensemen in scoring despite missing four mid-season games while playing with the U.S. under-20 national team at the International Ice Hockey Federation world championships in the Czech Republic.
Fairchild was named to the Western Collegiate Hockey Association all-rookie team and got off to a strong start with 10 points in his first 15 games of the season. He also tallied assists in two of Minnesota’s games at the WCHA Final Five as the Gophers reached the title game.
Fairchild was one of three WCHA players on the six-member freshman All-America team along with Colorado College goaltender Richard Bachman and St. Cloud State forward Garrett Roe. Other players selected to the squad were Michigan State defenseman Jeff Petry, Boston College forward Joe Whitney and Miami forward Carter Camper.
The Gophers finished 19-17-9 and made their eighth consecutive NCAA tournament appearance, falling to Boston College in the Northeast Regional semifinals.
