Podominick Leads Minnesota at Gopher Open

The University of Minnesota women's track and field team competed today at Bierman Field in its final meet before the Big Ten Championships. Minnesota had an overall team contribution today with seven different Gophers taking first place in eight of the 17 meets.

The Golden Gophers were led by Liz Podominick, who won in both the shot put and discus throw. Podominick threw a mark of 52 feet, inches in the shot put and marked a score of 169 feet in the discus throw.

Danie Ashford won the 3,000-meter steeplechase, which saw four Gophers in the top four spots. Ashford ran a time of 11 minutes, 10.93 seconds with Maggie Bobbin (11:38.78), Katelyn Barylak (12:33.46) and Celia Hemmerich (12:51.29) following behind.

Minnesota also took the top four spots in the 800-meter run with Gabriele Anderson winning with a time of 2 minutes, 8.74 seconds. Chiallis Larson (2:09.24) took second with Nikki Swenson (2:10.34) and Jayme Dittmar (2:10.55) coming in third and fourth.

Yet, those were not the only events that the Gophers finished first through fourth. Minnesota also took the first four spots in the pole vault. Alicia Rue won the vault with a vault of 13 feet, 7 inches. Following behind Rue was Sam Sonnenberg (12-7 ), Ashley Nord (12-1 ) and Andrea Smith (12-1 ).

Heather Dorniden won the 400-meter dash with a time of 54.46 seconds, while teammate Kate Baillon (58.88) finished second in the 400 meters.

Jill Steinbach and Ruby Jadocaj also won their events. Steinbach ran a time of 63.09 seconds to win the 400-meter hurdles, while Jadocaj threw mark of 180 feet to win the javelin throw.

The University of Minnesota will head to Champaign, Ill. May 16-18 to compete in the Big Ten Championships.
