Narzisi Advances to U.S. Women's Open Sectional Qualifier

University of Minnesota freshman Mary Narzisi (Omaha, Neb.) shot a 5-over 77 Tuesday afternoon at Woodhill Country Club in Wayzata, Minn. to advance to the sectional qualifier for the 2008 United States Women's Open Golf Championship. The 2008 U.S. Women's Open will take place June 23-29 at Interlachen Country Club in Minneapolis.

Former Gopher Karen Weiss carded a 2-under 70 to lead a group of 12 golfers that qualified for the sectional, to be played in early June. A pair of other Gopher freshmen, Samantha Sommers and Michele Edlin, also played in the local qualifier at Woodhill Country Club. Sommers shot an 80 and is listed as the first alternate for the qualifier while Edlin finished in a tie for 18th with an 83.


Narzisi played in a team-high 10 tournaments this season for the Gophers and was second on the team with a 78.58 stroke average. She recorded two top-10 finishes during the spring season, a tie for third place at the Rio Verde Invitational with a 3-over 219 and a tie for fourth place with a 22-over 238 at the Diablo Grande Intercollegiate.

Sommers (St. Cloud, Minn.) saw action in nine tournaments this season, finishing third on the team with a stroke average of 79.51. Her best finish of the season came on Mar. 18 with an 11th place finish at the Diablo Grande Intercollegiate.

Edlin (Jackson, Minn.) competed in six tournaments during her freshman season with the Gophers. She averaged 83.66 in 18 rounds played and shot a 30-over 246 at the Indiana Invitational for her best 54-hole score of the season.
