University of Minnesota head men’s gymnastics coach Mike Burns was elected President of the College Gymnastics Association (CGA) at the organization’s recent meetings in Battle Creek, Mich. The CGA is the coaches’ association for collegiate men’s gymnastics.

Burns, who has served as the CGA’s vice president since 2004, will succeed Nebraska’s Francis Allen as president. Burns said his role with the CGA will consist of helping to direct and hopefully grow the sport at the collegiate level.

“I’m excited about being president of this group,” Burns said. “I am looking forward to leading the group in a positive direction. One of the bigger challenges facing the association is the size of our sport at the collegiate level. We need to effectively retain and possibly add more teams in the years ahead.”

In addition to being an officer with the CGA, Burns has been a member of the USA Gymnastics Board of Directors since 2000. He has also been a member of the USA Gymnastics Finance Committee since 2000. Burns also serves as President of the United States Elite Coaches Association for Men’s Gymnastics, a position he has held since 2002.
