Burns Blog: Alvarez Left Off Olympic Team

They made the final selection of the Olympic Team today. It was a very difficult decision and process according to the Selection Committee. The six-man team is Paul Hamm, Jonathan Horton, Joeseph Hagerty, Morgan Hamm, Justin Spring and Kevin Tan. They named three replacement athletes in the event that Paul Hamm is not able to show readiness at the Olympic Camp.

Unfortunately, our own Guillermo Alvarez was not selected for the 2008 Olympic Team. He did however show an amazing amount of consistency over the four days of competition, hitting 24 of his 24 routines. That is an amazing feat at this level. In spite of the fact he did not make the Olympic Team, he still helped give the University of Minnesota an amazing amount of solid exposure in the gymnastics world.

I'm so proud of Guillermo for the outstanding performances he had over this grueling competitive process. In spite of the disapppointment of not making the team, he is still a member of the US Senior National Team and can still compete for the United States after the Olympic Games.

Guillermo will go down as one of the top gymnasts in Gopher Gymnastics history.
