Gophers Compete in Opening Day of U.S. Swimming Trials

The University of Minnesota women's swim team competed in the first day of the United States Olympic Swimming Trials, today in Omaha, Neb. The event, which runs from today until July 6, is held at the Qwest Center.
Only two events were contested today in the 100 butterfly and the 400 individual medley. Megan Braun competed in the 100 fly and led the Gophers with a 42nd-place finish and a time of 1:00.95. Kaylee Jamison also competed in the event, placing 112th overall in 1:02.65 out of 140 competitors.
Kait Strickland and incoming freshman Kristen Steenvoorden was the Gophers' representatives in the 400 individual medley. Strickland placed 44th overall in 4:53.89, while Steenvoorden touched the wall in 5:07.00 for 81st overall.
Events contested tomorrow is the 100 back, the 100 breast and the 400 free. Competing in the events for Minnesota is Roxane Akradi (100 back), Castina Wabeke (100 back), Kimberly Kazika (100 breast), former Gopher Keri Hehn (100 breast) and Christine Jennings (400 free). Heats begin at 11 a.m. tomorrow morning.
