Minnesota’ Mary Narzisi came within a hole of winning the 2008 Women’s Western Golf Association (WWGA) National Amateur Championship on the Canongate course at the SummerGrove Golf Club in Newnan, Ga., last week as the sophomore-to-be was defeated by Virginia senior-to-be Jennie Arseneault, 1 up, in the championship match.
Narzisi, who led the Gophers in tournament appearances as a true freshman with 10 last season, tied for 22nd in the stroke play field of 143 players behind rounds of 77 and 72 before catching fire in match play. She reeled off victories in five straight matches, including a 20-hole marathon win over Alabama senior-to-be and 2008 first team All-SEC performer Kathleene Ekey in the semifinals.
In the final, Narzisi jumped out to a 3 up lead through the first five holes, but was unable to keep the hot streak alive.
Arseneault fought back for wins on the 6th, 8th and 9th holes to even the match at the turn.
Narsizi won the 14th hole to take a 1 up lead, but Arseneault captured the 16th and 17th hole to take a one up lead to the 18th and final tee. Both players matched pars on the 18th hole to give Arseneault the win.
