Tyler Leads Gophers at the 2008 Mutual of Omaha Swimvitational

The University of Minnesota was well represented at the 2008 Mutual of Omaha Swimvitational, June 5-8 in Omaha, Neb. Jillian Tyler led the Gophers with the highest finish at the meet, finishing second in the 100-meter breaststroke. Tyler touched the wall in 1:08.86, finishing second behind Megan Jendrick in a time of 1:07.41. Amanda Beard followed Tyler as she clocked a time of 1:09.27, while Annie Chandler placed fourth overall in 1:09.97. Tyler also competed in the 200 breast and the 200 individual medley.
Christine Jennings also advanced to the championship final in the 400-meter freestyle event. Jennings held a prelim time of 4:15.86 to advance her to the A final and posted a time of 4:17.04 to finish seventh overall in the event. Jennings also competed in the 100 free (59.96) and the 200 free (21st in 2:04.34).
Roxane Akradi and Castina Wabeke each competed in the 100 and 200 backstrokes. Akradi finished her morning 100 back heat with a 14th-place showing of 1:04.17. She followed with a time of 2:23.69 in the 200 back and 40th overall. Wabeke followed Akradi in the 200 back with a time of 2:23.81, while clocking a time of 1:06.76 in the 100 back.
Megan Braun competed in both of the butterfly and the 200 free events. Braun competed in the 200 fly B final after posting a heat time of 2:19.12. She also finished 31st in the 100 fly (1:02.58) and 61st in the 200 free (2:06.63). Kait Strickland placed ninth during the 200 breaststroke heats (2:34.23) and finished 22nd overall in the 200 IM (2:22.60).
Jenny Shaughnessy competed in three events, including a 13th-place heat showing (2:21.36) in the 200 individual medley. She finished the 100 free with a time of 59.72, placed 36th in the 200 free (2:05.30). Stacy Busack and Meredith McCarthy each competed in the 100 and 200 freestyle events. Busack chipped in a 43rd-place time of 58.30 in the 100 free and a time of 2:07.47 in the 200 free. McCarthy held a time of 2:07.67 in the 200 free and a time of 58.41 in the 100 free.
Minnesota also finished high in the relay events with Shaughnessy, Busack, McCarthy and Jennings competing in each event. In the 4 x 100 free relay, the foursome clocked a second-place time of 3:52.88. They followed with another second-place finish in the 4 x 200 free relay with a time of 8:25.12.
