In addition to hosting the NCAA Championships, the University of Minnesota men’s gymnastics squad will face one of the most competitive schedules in the nation in 2009. Golden Gopher head coach Mike Burns announced his schedule for the upcoming season Friday.
Included on Minnesota’s schedule are the top four teams from the 2008 NCAA Men’s Gymnastics Championships. Fortunately for the Gophers, those four opponents will all travel to the Sports Pavilion.
“The home schedule is extremely tough,” Burns said. “We’re facing the top four teams from last year’s NCAAs -- Penn State, Oklahoma, Stanford and Illinois. Plus we’re hosting the NCAA meet at the end of the season. This is a great opportunity for us to compete with the best of the best and hopefully become the best of the best.”
Minnesota will open the regular season Jan. 17 at the Windy City Invitational in Chicago. The first home meet will be Jan. 24, when Calgary and Washington visit Minneapolis. Penn State comes calling to the Sports Pavilion to round out the first month of the season on Jan. 31.
The Gophers will be on the road for the entire month of February. The USA Gymnastics Winter Cup is slated for Feb. 5-7. Minnesota will have a Valentine’s Day matchup with Iowa and Nebraska in Iowa City. The team travels to Oakland, Calif. for the Pacific Coast Classic and wraps up the month with a road meet at Illinois-Chicago.
March comes in like a Lion, with a terrific matchup at the Sports Pavilion. The Gophers host defending national champion Oklahoma and runner-up Stanford on March 7. Following a March 15 trip to Nebraska, the regular season wraps up with a home meet vs. Illinois.
The Big Ten Championships are slated for April 3-4 at Michigan. The NCAA Championships will then take place April 16-18 at the Sports Pavilion.
