The College Gymnastics Association (CGA) has announced its All-America Scholar-Athletes for the 2008 season. Seven University of Minnesota gymnasts were honored. The Gophers had three first-team selections and four second-team honorees.
Minnesota’s All-America Scholar-Athlete first-teamers were Aaron Fortunato (So., Bedford, Ohio); Thomas O’Brien (So., Westfield, N.J.) and Kyle True (Sr., Brookfield, Wis.). Gophers listed on the second team were Kit Beikmann (Jr., Brighton, Colo.); Sergei Dmitriev (Sr., Minsk, Belarus); Colin McGuire (So., Plano, Texas) and Adam Reichow (So., Eden Prairie, Minn.).
“It's always great to be able to recognize our student-athletes who excel in the classroom as well as in the gym,” Gopher head coach Mike Burns said. “Our academic success is a big part of our focus. When these guys are done with their eligibility there aren't any lucrative professional contracts waiting for them. These guys will be relying on the solid education they receive here at the University of Minnesota to determine their future success. I admire these guys for their determination to succeed in their studies.”
The CGA awards first-team All-America Scholar-Athlete distinction to men’s gymnasts with a grade-point average better than 3.50. Second-team awards are given to those student-athletes with a GPA between 3.20 and 3.499.
