For the second consecutive week, a University of Minnesota golfer garnered a top-five finish at a major tournament with the state's boarders. Last week it was Gopher senior Kelli Berns with a fourth place finish at the Minnesota State Open.

This week, Berns' teammate, sophomore Mary Narzisi, was the recipient with a fifth place finish at the Minnesota State Amateur. Heading into Thursday's final round, seven golfers with Gopher ties were in the hunt of then leader Olivia Lansing for a chance at the title.

Narzisi started the day one shot behind Lansing as the pair teed off at Edina Country Club Thursday afternoon. Day three was not kind to either golfer, however, as they eventually finished six and four shots, respectively, behind Alison Meyer, who recorded her second straight 1-under par 72 en route to the championship. Narzisi, who finished second at the Women's Western Golf Championship in June, posted a 12-over 231 (78-73-80) for the tournament.

Fellow Minnesota sophomore Michele Edlin, the runner-up at the Minnesota State Match Play Championships, was one shot behind Narzisi and finished in a tie for sixth at 13-over 232 (81-75-76). Samantha Sommers and Berns were among a group that finished in 13th place at 17-over 236 while Paige Bromen, Christine Herzog and Young Na Lee finished tied for 17th, tied for 19th and 22nd, respectively.

The Gophers will open the 2008-09 season on Sept. 13-14 at the Wolverine Invitational in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
