Sophomore Jade Beattie and senior Amanda Miles both tallied perfect 4.0 grade point averages in 2008 to top the list of Golden Gophers on the Scholar-Athlete team. Miles, a two-year team captain, was named to the honor roll for the second time as she was also an NACGC/W Academic Scholar-Athlete in 2006. Miles earned her bachelor's degree in psychology in May, and was a top competitor for the Gophers on beam and floor last season.
Beattie was also a repeat honoree after being named to the NACGC/W academic honor list in 2006 and 2007. Beattie is majoring in physiology and pre-dentistry, and is a top vaulter for the Golden Gopher squad, while also competing on bars and floor. In addition to NACGC/W academic honors, Beattie was also named one of Minnesota's Top Five, an award given to the five upper-class student-athletes at the University of Minnesota with the highest GPA's.
Angela Walker Walker, a neuroscience major, made her fourth appearance on the honor list after also being named a Scholar-Athlete in 2005, 2006 and 2007. Walker is an all-around competitor for the Gophers, and was consistently a top scorer for the team on bars, beam and floor last season.
Seniors Andy Cornelius and Ashley Stanton earned their first NACGC/W Scholar-Athlete awards. Cornelius served as a student assistant coach in the 2008 season after a shoulder injury ended her competitive career. Cornelius earned her bachelor's degree in nutrition in May.
Stanton earned her bachelor's degree in elementary education in May 2007, and spent the 2008 season working toward a master's degree and a teaching certificate. Stanton will complete her master's program in December. Throughout her career, Stanton was a top competitor on the beam for the Golden Gophers.
Gymnasts must earn a GPA of 3.5 or higher to be eligible for NACGC/W Scholar-Athlete honors. All five gymnasts earning NACGC/W academic honors were also named to the Big Ten's All-Academic Team.
