University of Minnesota junior Christine Herzog (Detroit Lakes, Minn.) outlasted her Gopher teammate Michele Edlin (Jackson, Minn.) to capture the Minnesota Women's State Match Play Championship Aug. 3 at The Jewel Golf Club in Lake City.

The championship came down to the end between Herzog and Edlin, who competed in the Championship Flight of the event. Herzog walked to 18th tee leading 1-up but Edlin made it interesting by reaching the par five hole in two. Edlin's putter let her down, however, as a three put and a Herzog birdie led to the 2-up victory.

Herzog appeared in seven of the team's 11 tournaments during her sophomore season with the Gophers. She finished with a stroke average of 80.2 over 20 rounds played. Her best finish of the season occurred at the Badger Invitational, where she carded a 36-hole total of 8-over par 152 to finish in a tie for 13th place.

Edlin competed in six tournaments during her freshman season at Minnesota and finished with a stroke average of 83.66 in 18 rounds played.

The Gophers finished the 2007-08 season on a high note, as they shot a four-day combined total of 1,231 to finish in a tie for eighth place with Iowa at the Big Ten Championships. Minnesota's combined score of 1,231 is the second lowest 72-hole tournament score in school history while the eighth place finish is the highest since finishing seventh in the 2004 Big ten Championships.

The Gophers will open the 2008-09 season on Sept. 13-14 at the Wolverine Invitational in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
