Ben Pisani carded six birdies Friday on his way to a 73 (+1) to lead Minnesota in the first round of the Gopher Invitational at Spring Hill Golf Club in Wayzata. Teammate Andy Paulson fired a 2-over 74 and Victor Almstrom birdied two of his last three holes to manage a 75 (+3). Minnesota finished the opening round in a tie with Marquette for fifth at 298 (+10).
Texas junior Charlie Holland holds the individual lead after shooting a five-under 67. Holland and Minnesota native Donald Constable, who shot a two-under 69, helped give the Longhorns a three-shot lead after the first day of play. LSU sits in second place (285), followed by Pepperdine (291) and Washington (292).
Minnesota junior Thomas Campbell, playing as an individual, fired a team-low 72 to finish the day in a tie for ninth at even par. Pisani, along with fellow Gophers Patrick Datz and Cameron White, finished the first day in a tie for 14th at 1-over.
The highlight of the first round came when Marquette's Ben Sieg holed out on the par 3 188-yard fourth hole. More interesting was that Sieg’s threesome played the hole in -4. Iowa State's Michael Wuertz and Washington's Darren Wallace each recorded birdies on the hole as well.
Saturday tee times for the second round of the Gopher Invitational start at 8:00.
