For the second consecutive week the University of Minnesota women's golf team traveled to Michigan. Last week the Gophers finished second in the rain-shortened Wolverine Invitational. This week, the squad will be returning home with a fifth place finish in the Mary Fossum Invitational in East Lansing after carding a team score of 917, six shots behind fourth place Missouri.
Michigan State and Kent State tied for the team lead after the 54-hole event with identical scores of 28-over par 891. The host Spartans were awarded the team title by virtue of a second tie breaker. Kent State's Kirby Dreher took home medalist honors with a 54-hole score of 1-over 217. Dreher shot back-to-back 74's after opening the tournament with a 3-under par 69.
The Gophers had four players finish in the top 20 individually, led by sophomore Teresa Puga in 14th with a 10-over par 226. She opened the tournament with an even par round of 72 in the morning session on Saturday and shot a 2-over 74 in the afternoon before closing with an 80 on Sunday. Mary Narzisi finished in a tie for 15th place after carding a final round 78. She opened the tournament with rounds of 74 and 76.
Senior Kelli Berns, coming off a second place finish at the Wolverine Invite, shot a 79 on Sunday and finished in 19th place. A pair of Gopher sophomores, Michele Edlin and Samantha Sommers, finished in a tied for 26th and tie for 59th while junior Christine Herzog, playing the invitational as an individual, tied for 52nd.
The Gophers will stay in Big Ten Country for their next competition as they will head to Madison, Wis. to compete in the Badger Invitational on Sept. 27-28. The Invite will be played at University Ridge Golf Course, a 6,204 yard par 72 course.
