The University of Minnesota men’s golf team opened the 2008-09 season by hosting the Gopher Invitational at Spring Hill Golf Club on Sept. 12-14. The squad finished in a tie for sixth place in the fourth annual event, a spot the coaches and players were not happy with.
The Gophers were off last week and following the first 36 holes at the Adams Cup in Newport, Rhode Island on Monday, it looks as if they used the week to refine their games. Minnesota led by two strokes after 18 holes in the morning and is currently in second place, five shots behind Texas A&M, with a score of 5-under par 571. The Aggies overtook the Gophers after combining to shoot 8-under par in the afternoon session.
Minnesota held the early lead after carding a combined 4-under par score of 284. Senior Victor Almstrom and junior Ben Pisani led the way with a pair of 2-under par 70’s while Thomas Campbell and Yu Katayama chipped in with a 71 and a 73, respectively.
The afternoon session belonged to freshman Derek Chang. After carding a 3-over par 75 in the morning session, Chang rebounded with a 4-under par 68, Minnesota’s best score of the day. Almstrom added an even par round of 72 and is in a tie for fifth place individually at 142 (-2). Pisani, with a 73 in the afternoon 18, and Chang are in a tie for seventh place at 143 (-1) while Katayama and Campbell are in a tie for 16th at 147 (+3).
Texas A&M’s Bronson Burgoon is in first place after rounds of 69 and 66, four strokes better than Southern Mississippi’s Rocky Cleland.
The final round of the Adams Cup will be played Tuesday morning at the Orchard Course at Newport National Golf Club in Newport, Rhode Island.
