The Golden Gopher men’s and women’s basketball teams will be participating in an Urban Ventures Clinic for underprivileged youth of South Minneapolis on Saturday at the Colin Powell Youth Leadership Center and sponsored by the Urban Stars Athletic Club. A total of 320 urban youth from third to eighth grades, 160 boys and 160 girls, will take part as the Gopher women hold a morning clinic from 9-11 a.m. followed by a clinic held by the Gopher men from 1-4 p.m.

The youth will have the opportunity to interact with the Golden Gopher players over a lunch program, after the girls’ clinic in the morning and before the boys’ clinic in the afternoon. The program will center on the topic of sports and education and how the combination can contribute to building personal strengths and character. Press interviews with Gopher women’s Coach Pam Borton and a member of the Gopher men’s coaching staff (Coach Tubby Smith is unable to attend due to the funeral of his nephew) are available from 1-1:20 p.m.

The state-of-the-art Colin Powell Youth Leadership Center was opened in October of 2007 and includes athletic facilities to house various youth sports leagues throughout the year.

As published on the Urban Ventures website, “the mission of Urban Ventures is to build successful community within the city by:
* Developing youth leadership through sports and recreation programs as well as enhancing opportunities for academic success and job-skills training through technology and mentoring programs.
* Strengthening families by connecting individuals within the community to meet basic human needs of others; providing education and training to fathers giving them the skills and resources to be effective dads; reaching the Latino community.
* Creating meaningful work opportunities by recruiting, starting and growing businesses within the community's Opportunity Zone; developing and encouraging local ownership of business; involving community members in the business process and management; and supporting existing businesses within the Opportunity Zone.”
