Gold Team Defeats Maroon in First Game 4-2

The Gold team defeated the Maroon Squad 4-2 in eight innings on Friday, Sept. 26 in the first game of the “Steak N Beans” Fall Intrasquad Games to take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-seven series.

Maroon started the scoring in the bottom of the first when AJ Pettersen (Minnetonka, Minn.) reached first on an error, moved up on a single by Kyle Geason (Eden Prairie, Minn.) and scored on a sacrifice fly by Nick O’Shea (Blaine, Minn.) to make it 1-0.

The Gold Team got the run back in the top of the second inning to tie the game at 1-1. Kyle Knudson (Maple Grove, Minn.) opened the inning with a single to centerfield, and moved up to third on a single by freshman Matt Puhl (North St. Paul, Minn.)

Gold took the lead at 2-1 in the top of the third. Brooks Albrecht (Hutchinson, Minn.) led off with a single to left field, and moved up to second on a groundout by Sam Ryan (Lake Elmo, Minn.) Albrecht came home to score on an RBI single by Derek McCallum (Shoreview, Minn.) to give the Golden Team the one-run lead.

The Maroon Team tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the third. Pettersen was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, and stole second base. He came home to score his second run of the game when O’Shea drove him with an RBI single to left field.

Both teams did not score until the game moved to extra innings. In the eighth, Ethan Liederman (New York, N.Y.) singled with one out, and moved up to second when JT Canakes (Eden Prairie, Minn.) drew a walk. Robert Stevenson (St. Louis, Mo.) drew a walk to load the bases with one out. Albrecht followed with a two-run single to give the Gold Team a 4-2 lead.

Dustin Klabunde (Brownton, Minn.) gave up a pair of hits, but got out of the bottom of the eighth to preserve the victory for the Gold Team. He also struck out a pair of batters in the inning.

Klabunde combined with Cullen Sexton (Plover, Wis.) and Tyler Oakes (Jordan, Minn.) to limit the Maroon Team to five hits, one walk and no runs over the final five innings of the game.

Scott Fern (Eau Claire, Wis.) and Scott Matyas (North Prairie, Minn.) held down the Gold Team from the fourth to seventh, giving up just one hit and striking out four batters in four innings of work.

Seth Rosin (Shoreview, Minn.) gave up the two runs in the eighth to take the loss, while Klabunde picked up the win.

The Gold Team was led by Albrecht who had two hits, scored a run and knocked in two. Geason and O’Shea had two hits apiece for the Maroon Team.

NOTES: The second game of the series will be played on Saturday, Sept. 27 at 3:30 p.m. ... There was only error in the game, and it took place over two days.
