Peterson Wins Pole Vault With NCAA Provisional Mark

Junior Ben Peterson cleared an NCAA provisional and personal-best height of 17 feet, 4 1/2 inches to win the pole vault and highlight the Gophers’ performance at the season-opening Northwest Open on Saturday. Peterson’s vault is the sixth-best in school history.
Peterson was one of six Minnesota event champions in the meet. Raymond Blackledge was the only other winner in the field events topping the long jump with a leap of 22-6 3/4.
Redshirt freshman Joe McFarland won the mile run in his first meet as a Golden Gopher. McFarland clocked a time of 4 minutes, 23.06 seconds.
Other champions on the track were R.J. McGinnis running a time of 8.15 seconds in the 60-meter high hurdles, Logan Stroman in the 400 meters with a time of 49.88 and Rick Furseth in the 3,000-meter run in 8:47.02.
Minnesota continues its 2009 indoor schedule by hosting the Minnesota Open next Saturday, Jan. 17.
