Junior Alicia Rue’s performance in the pole vault highlighted the Minnesota women’s track & field team’s season-opening meet, the Northwest Open, at the University Fieldhouse on Saturday. Rue won the event with an NCAA provisional qualifying height of 13 feet, 3 1/2 inches.
Sophomore Samantha Sonnenberg was second in the pole vault with a height of 12-3 1/2.
Kari Schmidt opened her senior season with a victory in the shot put, landing an effort of 47-9. She added a runner-up showing in the weight throw with an effort of 50-9 1/2.
A majority of Minnesota’s top athletes, especially on the track, did not compete in the meet. The Golden Gophers are ranked No. 10 in the preseason U.S. Track & Field/Cross Country Coaches Association National Poll.
The Gophers return to action next Saturday, Jan. 17, when they host the Minnesota Open.
