Gopher Freshmen Sprinters Emerge

Senior Christin Kingsley placed second in the long jump, but it was a freshmen rush in the 60-meter dash preliminaries, that highlighted Minnesota’s performance in the first day of the Nebraska Holiday Inn Open in Lincoln on Friday.
Three true freshmen sprinters clocked times that would have been included in the top-10 marks in Gopher history. Going into the season, the number-10 time in school history was 7.80 seconds. Kylie Peterson was the top Gopher to advance to Saturday’s semi-final with a time of 7.73 seconds. Nyoke Giles (7.74) and Todea-Kay Willis (7.80) also moved on to the semis.
Kingsley finished second in the long jump with a leap of 19 feet, 1 1/2 inches. Kingsley led the competition until Butler Community College’s Chelsea Hayes passed her with the wining jump of 19-7 1/2 on her final of six attempts. Willis enjoyed a nice Gopher debut adding a third place showing in the long jump (18-9 1/4) to her performance in the 60 meters.
The Nebraska Open concludes on Saturday. While several Gophers are in action in Lincoln, the remainder of the Gopher squad will compete in the Minnesota Open at the University Fieldhouse on Saturday.
