The No. 1 University of Minnesota women’s hockey team held onto a 3-3 tie with No. 3 Minnesota Duluth, but won the shootout, 2-0, to earn two points in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association standings, tonight, in front of 2013 fans. With the tie, the Gopher record stands at 21-3-2 overall and 16-2-2 in the WCHA conference.
Minnesota’s win in the shootout was key, keeping the Golden Gophers in a tie for first place in the WCHA standings. Both Minnesota and Wisconsin hold 36 conference points, while the Bulldogs are in third place with 27 points.
The Golden Gophers got on the board early when Jen Schoullis scored at 5:14 in the first. Schoullis intercepted a pass just outside of the UMD blue line. She brought the puck into the zone and fired a shot over UMD goalie Johanna Ellison’s right shoulder for her 13th goal of the season.
Minnesota did not allow a shot on goal until the 11:23 mark of the first period. During that opening 10 minutes, the Gophers were outshooting UMD, 10-0, while holding an 11-5 advantage after the first stanza.
UMD tied the game at 8:38 in the second as Jocelyne Larocque placed the puck, five-hole, past Gopher goalie Jenny Lura during the power play. Minnesota responded with two goals of their own at 16:17 and 19:36 for a 3-1 lead heading into the final period of play. Emily West tipped a Monique Lamoureux slapshot at 16:17, while Gigi Marvin tallied the second assist. Lamoureux netted her own goal at 19:36 in the third when she converted on a two-on-one attempt. The Gophers caught UMD on a line change as Jocelyne and Monique Lamoureux created the two-on-one. As the UMD defenseman committed to Jocelyne, Monique fired in a shot for her 25th goal of the season.
UMD, however, added two goals in the third to even the game at 3-3 and sent it into overtime. Laura Fridfinnson scored her 12th goal of the season at 5:36. Sara O’Toole scored a four-on-three power play goal at 12:53 to tie the game.
With only five shots on goal between the two teams in overtime, the game ended in a tie. However, new this year to the WCHA is the shootout in which whatever team wins, adds an extra point to the conference standings.
Minnesota had Sarah Erickson, Monique Lamoureux and Marvin attempt the shootout, while UMD had O’Toole and Haley Irwin. Erickson started the shootout, making her wrist shot past Ellison. O’Toole attempted her shot, but was stuffed by Lura. After Lamoureux missed her attempt, so did Irwin, making it still a 1-0 advantage to Minnesota. Marvin made her shot when she went high on Ellison, solidifying the Gopher win.
It was the first shootout goal for Marvin and the second for Erickson. Minnesota’s last shootout opportunity came in the 1-1 tie against Wisconsin on Oct. 24. Erickson won the Wisconsin shootout for the Gophers as Minnesota earned the extra point there as well.
Lura made some key saves towards the end of the third period to keep the Gophers in the game. Along with stopping both UMD shootout attempts, she had 19 saves in the game. Her record is now 11-1-1 overall. It was the first blemish to Ellison’s record, who sits at 4-0-1.
Minnesota heads to Mankato, Minn., to take on Minnesota State, Mankato, next weekend. Friday’s game is set for a 7:07 p.m. start, while Saturday’s game is a 3:07 p.m., tilt. Minnesota’s next home action comes on Feb. 7-8 when Wisconsin visits Ridder Arena. Both of those games are at 2:07 p.m.
