Track and field fans who gathered at the Minnesota University Fieldhouse enjoyed a rare opportunity to see Gopher star Heather Dorniden run her specialty race, the 800 meters, at the Jack Johnson Classic on Saturday. Dorniden is often on the track in other distances or relays in early-season meets such as the Jack Johnson Classic, but today she took to the track in the 800 meters and breezed to the title in an NCAA provisional time of 2 minutes, 5.51 seconds. Dorniden is a six-time All-American in the 800 meters.
Dorniden paced a top-three sweep in the event for Minnesota, as Jamie Cheever finished second in 2:11.52 and Julie Schwengler placed third in 2:12.61.
Senior Gabriele Anderson added a second NCAA provisional performance for the Gophers. Anderson clocked a time of 9:31.62, a personal best and the fifth-fastest time in school history, finishing second behind former Gopher All-American Emily Brown (9:18.57). Gopher sophomore Elizabeth Yetzer was third in a career-best time of 9:36.34, the seventh-fastest time in Gopher history.
Natalie Devine and Caitlin Roemhildt turned in a 1-2 finish in the high jump. Devine cleared a career-high of 5-8 1/2, which ties for the fourth-best height in school history. Roemhildt was second with an effort of 5-6 1/2.
Pole vualter Alicia Rue collected her third consecutive meet title this season, clearing a height of 13 feet-5 3/4 inches. Samantha Sonnenberg finished third with a leap of 12-10 to move into a tie for No. 4 on the Gophers’ top-10 list in the event.
Other event champions for the Gophers were Kari Schmidt in the shot put (48-6 1/4), Christin Kingsley in the long jump (19-3 1/2), Kelly Wilson in the 5,000-meter run (17:45.59), Adrienne Thomas in the 400-meter dash (57.48) and the Gophers’ 4x400-meter relay (3:49.96) of Chioma Omeoga, Kylie Peterson, Nyoka Giles and Dorniden
