The University of Minnesota wrestling team sent eight wrestlers to the Flash Open in Dubuque, Iowa over the weekend, and three Gopher freshmen came home with titles. Cody Yohn (174 pounds), Ryland Geiger (197 pounds) and Atticus Disney (Hwt.), each likely to serve a redshirt season this year for the Gophers, each claimed individual titles.

While the Minnesota varsity squad was in the Dallas area this weekend improving the team’s dual meet record to 6-2 with three wins at the Lone Star Duals, select Gopher reserves and redshirt candidates were getting in some extra work. Matt Mincey (2nd, 141 pounds), Mario Mason (2nd, 157 pounds) , Joe Murphy (3rd, 141 pounds), and David Zilverberg (4th, 141 pounds) also placed for the Gophers in Dubuque.

Geiger cruised to the 197-pound title with a perfect 4-0 record. After earning a 12-4 major decision win in his first match, Geiger pinned Wisconsin-La Crosse’s Josh Keller (5:20) and Upper Iowa’s Cody Northern (2:36) before clinching the title with a  5-0 decision win over Loras’ Alex Graft. The Scappoose, Ore. native improved his season record to 16-3. The tournament title was Geiger’s second of the season after he captured the Bison Open in Fargo, N.D. on Nov. 15.

Yohn’s championship came in the 174-pound bracket where the Alamosa, Colo. native posted a perfect 4-0 record. Yohn posted a major decision win in the opening round before grinding out decision wins over NIACC’s Brett Rosedale (9-3) and Loras’ Mike Levasseur (8-4) to earn a berth in the championship match. In the final, Yohn dominated Jake Gosch of Wisconsin-La Crosse with a 17-2 technical fall victory to earn the title. The tournament title was Yohn’s second of the season and improved his season record to 11-3.

Disney’s heavyweight crown came after he recorded falls in each of his first two matches. Disney pinned NIACC’s Zach Rosol in just :40 in his first match of the day. The freshman stuck Michigan’s Ben Apland just 1:40 into their semifinal bout and claimed the tournament title when Loras’ Trevor Kaufman submitted a forfeit in the championship match.
