Whitehead leads Gold to Victory at Intrasquad Meet

Sophomore Hannah Whitehead led the Gold team to a 148-144 victory over the Maroon team by winning two individual events at the annual Intrasquad Meet at the University Aquatic Center in Minneapolis.
Whitehead first won the 100 backstroke in 57.14 before crushing a nine-person field in the 200 back with a time of 2:03.91. Gold teammate Cory Miller finished second in the 200 back in 2:06.71.
Maroon competitor Ashley Steenvoorden led all Golden Gophers by winning three individual events. Her first victory came in the 1000 freestyle in 9:50.29, with her second coming in the 200 free with a time of 1:50.00. Steenvoorden finished off the night with a first-place finish in the 500 free in 4:53.01.
Junior Jillian Tyler and maroon competitor also won multiple individual events, taking first in the 100 breastroke and the 200 breast. Tyler defeated a nine-person field in the both the 100 breast (1:01.10) and 200 breast (2:15.23). Tyler helped win in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:44.37. With her were senior Andrea Hanson, freshman Annalise Colton and junior Meagan Radecke.
Also winning two individual events for the maroon team was sophomore Kelci Bryant. Bryant soundly won in both the 1-meter (322.75) and the 3-meter (335.85) to sweep the diving events.
In the 200 free relay, sophomore Marissa Davies, junior Alison Eggers, junior Kaylee Jamison and freshman Lauren Weis took first for the gold team in 1:35.50. Eggers also won the 50 free (24.04), while Jamison took first in the 100 butterfly (55.55). Davies also won an indidividual event, winning the 100 free in 51.66.
Also winning individual events were sophomore Kristen Steenvoorden in the 400 individual medley (4:23.68) and junior Kelsey Ridder in the 200 fly (2:03.91)
The University of Minnesota women’s swimming and diving team next will start their regular season in Madison, Wis. against Wisconsin on Oct. 30.
