Maroon Defeats Gold at Intrasquad Meet

With an overall group effort, the Maroon team defeated the Gold team 179-119 at the annual Intrasquad Meet at the University Aquatic Center in Minneapolis. Maroon team members Drew Brown, Curt Carlson, Karl Burdis, Ivan Gutesa and Kevin Baseheart all won two individual events to lead their team to the solid victory.
Baseheart took first in both the 100 and 200 butterfly, defeating an eight-person field in the 100 fly (49.48) and a six-person field in the 200 fly (1:51.06). The junior from Milwaukee, Wis. also swam a leg in the 200 medley relay that took first for the Maroon team in 1:31.92. Along with Baseheart in the relay were Golden Gophers Karl Burdis, Rob Schnitzler and Goran Majlat.
Dublin, Ire. native Burdis also won two individual events for the Maroon team. He first won in the 100 backstroke with a time of 49.99 before winning the 200 back in 1:52.43.
Maroon teammates Brown and Carlson also took home two individual victories. Brown swept the diving events, scoring 396.95 on the 3-meter and 340.55 on the 1-meter, while Carlson won the 200 freestyle (1:40.20) and the 100 free (45.16).
Junior Ivan Gutesa was the final Gopher to win two individual titles. He first swam a time of 57.01 in the 100 breaststroke to secure his first victory before winning the 200 breast in 2:04.51.
Michael Richards and Ray Betuzzi led the Gold team with two event victories. Richards won an individual title in the 50 free in 20.42, while Betuzzi won the 500 free in 4:37.69. They both swam a leg on the 200 free relay that finished first (1:23.67). Also part of the relay were freshman Ben Griggs and sophomore Zach Bolin.
Also winning individual events were freshman Michael McBroom in the 1000 free (9:25.77) and senior Alex Wold in the 400 IM (4:04.02).
The University of Minnesota men’s swimming team starts their regular season in Madison, Wis. against Wisconsin on Oct. 30.
